COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The 45th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. celebration will be held on Jan. 18 at 3:30 p.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church Parish Life Center on Floral Avenue. The event will feature drumming, song, stories, and entertainment that concludes with a community dinner.  Action News Now
  • Before 10 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 16, a gas leak was reported on the 1100 block of Chestnut Street during a Cal Water construction project between 11th and 12th, and residents were ordered to shelter in place — officials later lifted the order so routines resumed.  Action News Now
  • Local officials announced that the free gravel grant is now expanded to help residents on the Ridge and in Magalia keep their homes safe from fire hazards beyond the Camp Fire footprint.  Action News Now

CULTURE NEWS

  • On Jan. 18 and Jan. 19, Cinemark will celebrate National Popcorn Day by offering $5 popcorn fills when customers bring their own clean container to theaters including Chico—using a Lowe’s blue bucket will also secure a coupon for extra popcorn in February.  KRCR
  • Tom Arnold, known from Roseanne and True Lies, will perform live at Feather Falls Casino in Oroville on Jan. 24. He recounts stories about stealing cake from Madonna and snubbing Hugh Grant — and shares his take on Californians.  Action News Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Motion Mania has opened at Gateway Science Museum where visitors can learn science by building roller coasters and testing energy tracks. Field trips for grades 1-6 will begin January 27 and the exhibit runs through May 16.  Action News Now
  • Chico State University is considering consolidating evening classes into one or a few newer buildings to cut energy costs—this proposal could save millions annually.  Action News Now
