COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Habitat for Humanity of Butte County received a $125,000 disaster recovery grant from Verizon to launch its Habitat Disaster Recovery Rebuild Program (helping Camp Fire survivors rebuild homes on existing properties). The project supports a long-term recovery amid ongoing wildfire challenges.  KRCR
  • North Valley Fiber has installed more than half the conduit and over a quarter of the fiber optic cable in Chico as part of an ongoing project that will connect over 9,000 locals to high-speed internet (at as low as $40 a month).  Action News Now
  • Wednesday marked Nathan Espindula's final day at Action News Now - he will soon start work at a TV station in Anchorage. The station thanked him for his service.  Action News Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Chico Unified Schools updated its immigration enforcement policy so staff won’t seek or record citizenship status for students and families; the board will discuss the new protections Wednesday night (meant to ease fears and ensure access to public education).  KRCR
  • Chico Trades Day is today at the Silver Dollar Fairgrounds from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The event, hosted by Valley Contractors Workforce Foundation and partners, will give 800 high school students hands-on experience in construction skills like welding and operating a mini-excavator.  Action News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Chico Fire Department received new gas detection gear from Cal Water’s annual Firefighter Grant Program — over $186,000 in funds awarded to nine departments will improve emergency response and public safety.  Action News Now
  • The Town of Paradise is enforcing the STAKE Act to stop illegal flavored nicotine sales to minors. In late December 2025 and on Jan. 8, police and code enforcers visited 16 retailers, seizing thousands of prohibited products (flavored vapes and tobacco) with further investigations planned.  KRCR
  • Construction on the new U.S. Forest Service fire station at 1350 Skyway is underway on the east side of Chico, with vertical work set to begin next week (weather permitting) and completion planned by winter; the facility will host the Feather River Interagency Hotshot Crew and a Plumas National Forest engine while local traffic may increase.  Action News Now
