COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Chico Area Recreation & Park District updated its board on Jan. 22 on construction progress for the new Aquatic Center and Bike Park — a key step in advancing the planned projects. Officials said the projects are progressing as scheduled.  Action News Now

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Chico Art Center will celebrate its 70th Anniversary Gala on Friday, Feb. 27 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Lakeside Pavilion on California Park Drive. The gala will feature dinner, live music and art activities, and proceeds will support its programs and expansion.  Action News Now
  • Chico’s weekend features film, music and festival events. The Pageant Theatre shows Sentimental Value (showtimes vary) today through Sunday while Naked Lounge hosts a music night Friday and KitKats Records presents cassette releases Saturday at 1078 Gallery, with the Snow Goose Festival running Thursday through Sunday at Patrick Ranch Museum.  North State Public Radio

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Pleasant Valley High School Music Boosters will host their 5th annual Mixtape Madness Gala at 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31 at the CARD Community Center on Vallombrosa Avenue; Lynette Kaber and Kayla Tyson will join Action News Now anchor Linda Watkins-Bennett at Noon to preview the event.  Action News Now
  • Nearly 1,000 high school students attended the 5th annual Trades Day at the Silver Dollar Fairgrounds on Thursday to learn about construction careers with hands-on demos (from 25 local schools). Hosts included local workforce foundations and Chico State’s Construction Management Program.  Action News Now
  • Chico Unified School District approved two updated board bylaws and 16 board policies Wednesday night. The changes will shape board procedures moving forward.  Action News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The United States Forest Service will host a wildland firefighter recruitment event from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Bell Memorial Union on Chico State campus, as explained by Adrienne Freeman on Action News Now (the event is open to those interested in a government career).  Action News Now
  • A new U.S. Forest Service fire station is under construction along Skyway to replace the one lost in the 2020 North Complex Fire; contractors have paved the driveway and will start vertical work soon, and the station (housing the Feather River Hotshot crew) is set to finish by winter.  Action News Now
