COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Aaron Rodgers NorCal Fire Recovery Fund at North Valley Community Foundation is accepting applications until Tuesday, Mar. 3 to fund Butte County youth health and wellness initiatives (with priority for programs in Camp Fire burn areas).  Action News Now
  • A new homeless encampment formed in Chico City Plaza on Feb. 3 after the city relocated individuals from City Hall to shelters — local residents and business owners call the site an eyesore and safety concern.  Action News Now

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Almond growers in Butte County brace for an early bloom as unusually warm winter temperatures push trees out of dormancy. They are applying fungicides and using irrigation ahead of forecast cold snaps and rain later this month to protect the 2026 crop.  KRCR

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At Tuesday's State of the University Address, President Perez said Chico State enrollment climbed for the third year while the governor’s budget proposal will bring more state funding (an increase of $365 million for the CSU system) to support growth.  North State Public Radio
  • University photographers Jason Halley and Matt Bates won first-place awards in the January UPAA contest (Halley for General Features and Bates for Personal Vision) while student Dash Ferrero earned third place for his image.  Chico State Today
  • The Butte College Foundation is accepting scholarship applications for $250K in awards for the 2026-27 academic year for incoming, current, and returning students (including high school seniors). The deadline to apply is March 15 at 11:59 p.m.  Action News Now
  • Chico Unified School District will enforce a new Clear Bag Policy at selected high school events to boost safety for students and community members; the policy (in effect since Jan. 1) will roll out in spring and be fully enforced at the start of the 2026 to 2027 school year.  KRCR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Chico Police shared defensive driving tips on Traffic Tuesday with Action News Now's Hayley Watts and Sgt. Todd Lefkowitz. The officer explained that checking road signs, mirrors (including speedometers) helps drivers avoid speeding and stay alert.  Action News Now
  • Shasta County Resource Management confirmed on Feb. 3 that grading work at Clear Creek Gun Club was done without a proper permit, violating county Grading and Erosion Control Standards. The oversight may prompt further enforcement measures.  Action News Now
