COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Chico Marketplace seeks formal wear donations for the 20th Annual Cinderella’s Closet prom giveaway for high schoolers. Donations are accepted at the Marketplace and CTA Offices until March 25, and the event runs Saturday, Mar. 28 and Sunday, Mar. 29 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. inside the Marketplace.  Action News Now
  • Firefighters from CAL FIRE Butte Unit rescued a baby goat that was stuck in a Biggs culvert on Wednesday around 2:30 p.m. They used an air monitoring system (ensuring a safe rescue) and later named the goat Lucky to reflect community compassion.  Action News Now

CULTURE NEWS

  • Chico Swing Band will perform a free Valentine’s Day concert & dance on Saturday, Feb. 14. The event brings live swing music to the local community.  Action News Now
  • Explore Butte County will host its 7th annual Museum Weekend on Feb. 28 and Mar. 1 at 15 museums and cultural centers in Chico, Oroville, Gridley and Durham. New exhibits and a Passport program for eatery deals run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at this free community event.  Action News Now
  • Butte County now accepts applications for the State-Local Partner designation — offering local arts agencies up to $75,000 a year to boost cultural development. Applicants must submit their packages by Sunday, March 15 and proposals will be reviewed Tuesday, April 14 at the Board of Supervisors meeting.  Action News Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Tuesday, Feb. 17, Sierra View Elementary School will hold its school-wide Science Fair featuring around 70 student projects. Judging runs from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m., and an evening exhibit for families is set from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at 1598 Hooker Oak Avenue + the event celebrates creative learning.  Action News Now
  • Young adults in the California Conservation Corps completed flood-readiness training at Red Bluff Recreation Area after December rains caused problems nearby; they filled sandbags and secured protective sheets to levees under guidance of the California Department of Water Resources.  Action News Now

  • Butte County Board of Supervisors approved nearly $500k funds from disaster recovery after the 2018 Camp Fire to develop a roadside fuel reduction plan that clears dry brush for safer evacuations, and officials will review right-of-way records (including a contract with Sacramento-based Ascent) for detailed planning.  Action News Now

  • In Motion Fitness is using solar power to keep dues steady amid renovations that add Muscle Beach, a Speakeasy workout space + a new parking lot designed to address member needs.  Action News Now
  • Butte County health officials say three people died from flu complications this season and are investigating a possible fourth death.  Action News Now
  • Butte County’s flu season is intensifying with a 14.5% infection rate and over 2.5% hospitalization rate, while three people have died and another death is under investigation as officials urge residents to get tested and vaccinated against the challenging H3 variant.  Action News Now

  • The new 64-unit Lakeridge Circle Apartments broke ground on Friday, Feb. 6 in Magalia with a reception at the Community Center and a ceremony at the construction site as CHIP works to rebuild affordable housing lost in the Camp Fire and serve families earning 30%-50% of the median income.  KRCR
