COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Nord Country School’s pie auction and dinner will take place Saturday, Mar. 7 at 5 p.m. at Elk’s Lodge, offering community members a chance to bid on pies and enjoy dinner.  Action News Now

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Traffic fatalities in Chico dropped 79% from 14 in 2022 to three in 2025 — a decline credited to Measure H revenue funding that led to hiring four full-time traffic officers in 2023.  Action News Now

CULTURE NEWS

  • Chico State’s Black Student Union will host the Victory in Unity Celebration on Sunday, Feb. 22 from 1–5 p.m. at the Bell Memorial Union (featuring live music, a keynote, games and community dinner) to honor Black History Month and the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  Chico State Today

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Chico Unified School District halted the rollout of AI features on its nearly $2 million Verkada system after teachers and parents voiced concerns at a Wednesday board meeting — the board set up a committee to review camera use and may ban facial recognition on campuses.  North State Public Radio

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Snow fell unusually in Chico near the Action News Now station at 8:45 a.m. and briefly blanketed Butte College before rain washed it away; a freeze warning is in effect from midnight to 9 a.m. Friday to protect people, pets, and crops.  Action News Now
  • The Northern California Regional Land Trust finalized a conservation easement with Kittyhawk Orchards’ landowners along Keefer Slough, securing the 267-acre property’s agricultural use permanently. The project (backed by California Climate Investments) protects the orchard from urban development near North Chico.  Action News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • PG&E crews are working to restore power for over 1,000 customers in Magalia, Forest Ranch, and nearby areas as winter weather moves through. They are assessing unplanned outages to identify any damaged sections before beginning repairs.  Action News Now

HEALTH NEWS

  • A new $9 million youth psychiatric facility called Orchard Horizon is under construction behind Orchard Hospital in Gridley. The building will offer 16 inpatient beds and is set to open by the end of the year despite some weather delays — providing critical local mental health care.  Action News Now

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • A former furniture store on Broadway St. has become The Westport, an 11,000 sqft venue for business conferences and weddings in downtown Chico. The transformation offers a new destination for local gatherings.  Action News Now
