COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Healthy Shasta marked its 20th anniversary on March 29 with a community walk at Turtle Bay that featured a scavenger hunt for 20 hidden gold shoes—over 3,000 entries vied for prizes including a Great Wolf Lodge trip and a gas card. The group said its next walk will take place in 2045 and it will hold a bike month challenge for May.  KRCR
  • On Saturday, local students visited the Chico Marketplace to pick up free formal wear for prom season donated by community members through Cinderella’s Closet—organized by the Marketplace and the California Teacher’s Association. The final day of the event is happening today from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the same location.  Action News Now

CULTURE NEWS

  • On March 29, the Hmong community at Chico State and Butte County held an event celebrating their journey to America and discussing mental health challenges; organizers said the gathering promoted understanding of past hardships and support for future resilience (officials noted about 4,800 Hmong residents in Butte County).  KRCR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Chico announced the temporary closure of Peterson Memorial Way in Lower Bidwell Park for tree maintenance beginning Tuesday, April 1, which will last four weeks and may be extended. City contractors will prune 548 trees and remove 21 to improve access for planned summer repaving — pedestrians and cyclists may still use the north side trail from One Mile east to Manzanita.  KRCR

  • Pleasant Valley High School hosted its 6th annual Brett Silva Memorial All-Star Soccer games in honor of coach Brett Silva — who was tragically killed by an impaired driver in a head-on DUI crash in 2017.  Action News Now
  • Local athletes with special needs competed in a Special Olympics basketball tournament at Acker Gym on the Chico State campus last Saturday after two months of training, and the Knights of Columbus provided free meals for players, coaches, and families at the event.  Action News Now
