- ➤ Chico Housing Action Team reached its fundraising match for a new 61-unit supportive housing project after receiving an anonymous donation of $150,000—this support met the goal needed. Groundbreaking will take place in May as CHAT begins building safe homes for those in need. Action News Now
- ➤ The Shasta County District Attorney's Office is hosting a denim drive as part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month until April 30th. Residents in Chico can donate denim clothing at the office to support the campaign. Action News Now
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A 50-year-old woman faced a felony vehicular manslaughter charge in a Chico courtroom after she struck Frank Moodie in July 2024 at the intersection of 12th Street and Park Avenue while holding her phone, and she is set to return on April 16 to set her trial date (she could get up to six years in prison if convicted). - ➤ Chico State will hold a candlelight vigil today at 7:30 p.m. on Kendall Lawn to honor Athena Passidakis, a health services administration major who passed away at age 21 on April 3. The University flag will be lowered — a tribute to her memory — as family and friends join the service. Chico State Today
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Pacific Gas and Electric announced a three-year wildfire mitigation plan for 2026-2028 that will underground 1,100 miles of powerlines in Northern and Central California and use drones and AI sensors to detect ignition risks — the plan also calls for improved vegetation management to lower wildfire risks. - ➤ The Chico Area Recreation and Park District awarded a contract to local contractor Slater and Son for a $30 million aquatic and recreation center on a 10-acre parcel on Garner Lane that will include water slides, a lazy river, and a 50-meter pool. Groundbreaking may begin at the end of April— the center will open in fall 2026. KRCR
- ➤ Californians must get a REAL ID to fly on domestic flights and enter federal facilities, so Daniel Gardner is stopping by the DMV before his trip to Hawaii. The DMV is busy as people prepare for the May 7 deadline—applicants need to show proof of identity, California residency, and a Social Security number. Action News Now
- ➤ City crews in Chico will soon repair streets by removing and replacing the top layer of asphalt & adding ADA-friendly changes, bike lane improvements, crack sealing and pothole repairs on many roads. Action News Now
