COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Chico's new bike bridge over East 20th Street is nearing completion and will open early June to give cyclists and pedestrians a safe route as crews finish guard rails, landscaping, and LED lights to ease safety concerns. The bridge will honor nursing student Kristina Chesterman with a plaque installed this summer (its rusted steel design matches other local bridges). Action News Now
- ➤ Chico History Museum and Bidwell Mansion Association are asking locals to share photos, artwork, or artifacts that show the history of the Bidwell Mansion lost in a fire in December 2024. The exhibit will open on June 7 at the museum with an opening event from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.—entries are accepted until May 1 with a $5 fee for selected items. KRCR
ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Crews repaired the E.20th Street overpass after an excavator arm struck its underside on Highway 99, reopening the eastbound #1 lane for traffic. The repair work was completed on April 18th. Action News Now
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Lexy Cosper of Chico was sentenced to four years and four months in state prison for hitting former mayor Randall Stone as he crossed a crosswalk—she nearly hit his son and had nearly five times the legal alcohol limit. Action News Now
- ➤ A driver left the roadway on Wilshire Drive and hit a power pole—shearing it off and knocking out power for nearby PG&E customers—before suffering minor injuries and being arrested for DUI. Action News Now
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Chico State University announced that it will posthumously award a full degree to Athena Passidakis, who was kidnapped and killed, with her older sister Angelique set to accept the honor on her behalf. Action News Now
- ➤ Chico State University will confer a posthumous degree to Athena Passidakis, a student who died in a murder-suicide earlier this month and was set to graduate in May with a degree in Health Services Administration—her family said community support and plans to enhance the Benton Dog Park in Redding honor her legacy. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ US Senator Adam Schiff visited Chico State this week to tour the student-run farm, where he saw projects such as the Organic Dairy Unit and regenerative agriculture practices aimed at restoring local ecosystems. He later addressed students in the Behavioral and Social Sciences Building about political engagement and agricultural challenges while the university prepares its new Agricultural Teaching Center and Farm Store (opening this fall). - ➤ Cal Fire Butte County hired 140 firefighters in February and early March after Gov Newsom issued an emergency proclamation, and the additional staff will train and prepare for the upcoming fire season. The unit will work on a Vegetation Management Project in South Paradise (funded by a $1.5m U.S. Forest Service grant) as officials ask residents to clear flammable vegetation from around their homes.
