- ➤ On May 17, the Butte County Scottish Society will host its annual summer picnic at Veteran’s Memorial Park in Chico from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will offer food, music, conversation, and performances by the Bagpipe and Drum Band—members enter free while non-members may join with a $5 donation or annual membership. - ➤ California Against the Sea: Visions for Our Vanishing Coastline by Rosanna Xia was selected as next year’s Book in Common, and the public kick-off will be held on May 7 from 4 to 6 p.m. in Chico’s City Plaza featuring speeches by local university leaders and the mayor — 90 percent of Chico State students backed a focus on sustainability that the book highlights. - ➤ Chico's Bidwell Park and Playground Commission met Tuesday to review two plans for South Park Drive between Cypress Street and Caper Acres, one that keeps one-way car access and another that closes the road to vehicles. The vote on a modified one-way plan failed and commissioners will revisit the changes at their May meeting—city engineers stress the need to finalize plans soon so construction can begin in 2026.
