- ➤ A Butte County judge declared Gridley man Hugo Cardenas not guilty by reason of insanity after he admitted to killing his mother on March 25 by stabbing her 40 times because he believed she was an impostor of the devil during a mental health crisis & he will face a placement hearing on May 25 to be committed to a secure state hospital while awaiting a jury trial to assess his sanity.
