  • The Smyth Slam Pickleball Tournament will be held at the Chico Racquet Club at 1629 Manzanita Avenue on May 17 and 18 to raise funds for Casey Smyth and his family after his serious hospitalization on January 2. Organizers said the two-day event will feature mixed and doubles matches and will help support his ongoing recovery.  Action News Now
  • At Bidwell Park Golf Course on Friday, 164 golfers played in the Swing “Fore” Cesar & Law Enforcement Mental Health Awareness Golf Tournament to raise $50,000 for mental health support programs while honoring fallen officer Cesar Sandoval, who died by suicide after a long career. A flyover by the Butte County Sheriff’s Office—part of the tribute—marked the community’s call for better care for law enforcement mental health struggles.  Action News Now
  • In Paradise, over 60 women volunteered to build two homes as part of the Women's Build fundraiser, which raised more than $50,000 to support affordable housing. Habitat for Humanity plans to build five more homes in Chico starting next month — they aim to complete 8 to 10 houses each year.  Action News Now
  • Today, WWII veteran Pvt. James (Stanley) Mitchell, who died as a Japanese prisoner 81 years ago, will be honored with a memorial service at 10 a.m. at the Hamilton City Fire Station and a graveside service at 1 p.m. in Los Molinos Cemetery after his remains were returned from Sacramento International Airport on Tuesday.  Action News Now
  • Chico's Companion Animal Welfare Alliance opened its PawPrints Spay/Neuter Clinic to address the stray and feral cat problem, treating more than 2,500 cats since March 2023. Volunteers and paid staff also offer a financial assistance program (P-SNAP) to help local pet owners get their animals fixed.  North State Public Radio

CRIME NEWS

  • Chico Police responded quickly to a shooting on W 9th St that left one person critically injured inside a home around 9:17 p.m. on Thursday night—officials say the suspect remains at large—and they urge anyone with information to come forward.  Action News Now
  • Chico police responded to a shooting at a home on the 300 block of West 9th Street on May 1 and transported a victim with gunshot wounds to a local hospital where the person is stable—officers also arrested several people with outstanding warrants as the investigation continues.  KRCR

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Chico State honored Shelley Hart with the Outstanding Faculty Service Award — recognizing her contributions as a professor in the Child Development Department and research associate. She has supported local children and families through work with key groups like First 5 Butte County and the Juvenile Justice Commission — strengthening community care and academic success.  Chico State Today
