🎭 Culture
Orange Street is transforming into an art district as local nonprofits and businesses lead mural contests that have already added seven new murals on The Rental Guys building.
Community events and block parties are scheduled, and more murals are planned (from West 8th to West 3rd) to beautify the corridor.
🎓 Education
Chico State’s College of Engineering will host its annual Senior Capstone Design Expo on Friday, May 8 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Colusa 100 and the Langdon Engineering Center (O’Connell Technology Center courtyard) where 100 students showcase real-world projects for industry sponsors including Medtronic, HAAS Automation and Lawrence Livermore.
Chico State's North State Student Ambassadors program helps rural students feel connected on campus by offering weekly meetings and events today.
The initiative connects 12 counties with peer mentorship, research, and community outreach to support rural students as they adapt to college life.
Turning Point USA returned to Chico State in April and set up a table on the Glenn Hall lawn on Tuesday (May 5), where students voiced both support and criticism and the group received online death threats.
Junior Addie Snyder said the chapter has signed twenty members since its return.
Former dean Patricia Stock has sued Chico State president Steve Perez and the board, alleging discrimination and retaliation after her firing over the selection of Ricardo Orellana as farm director (court documents detail racist remarks and donation threats).
🌲 Environment
The DWR said Lake Oroville is nearly full at 97% capacity with releases to the Feather River reduced from 1,700 to 1,300 cfs on May 3 & several boat ramps remain open with CHP inspections at the Oroville Dam Spillway.
The update aims to conserve water for recreation and safety.
🏛️ Government
Cal Fire Butte County is preparing for the 2026 fire season with early training, vegetation management, and staffing at the Chico Air Attack Base + two helicopters arriving by June to improve response and public safety.
Cal Fire's Tehama-Glenn Unit is hosting training at Ishi Conservation Camp through Friday to evaluate 51 fire crews on safety, fitness and firefighting skills for the upcoming fire season.
