Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 7th of May.
Good morning, Chico.
The True North Housing Alliance’s Howard Slater Navigation Center will be completed in August and is set to open this Fall in Chico to offer expanded on-site services for people in need after receiving a $6 million state grant — the project still must close a $450,000 fundraising gap and address lost federal funding challenges.
The City of Chico will invite residents to shape downtown’s future at a community workshop scheduled for Monday, May 12 at 6:00 p.m. at the City Council Chambers—where project goals will be detailed—and attendees can share ideas on upgrading traffic, parking, safety, and aging underground infrastructure.
The Home Depot Foundation is investing $5.5 million to support disaster preparedness and fire recovery in Butte County—this grant will help Habitat for Humanity rebuild at least eight homes and train local staff through a wildfire preparedness program.
The Chico Police Department is asking for help to locate 25-year-old Agustin Vega *who has not been seen since last Thursday near West Sacramento Avenue and Nord Avenue*.
Today the Chico City Council will discuss a new emergency ordinance that will regulate outdoor warming appliances—fireplaces, barbeques and fire pits—to reduce wildfire risks amid safety concerns linked to 104 confirmed homeless-related fires.
If approved, the ordinance will require a city permit for barbeque use in public and private areas and will take effect for 180 days until updated.
