  • Grand Master Farshad Azad from Azad's Martial Arts Studio in Chico visited the Action News Now team and taught self-defense techniques that focus on trusting instincts — staying calm and de-escalating stressful situations.  Action News Now
  • The Boys & Girls Clubs of the North Valley will host Barrels, Bites & Bounty on May 15 at Long Creek Winery and Ranch in Oroville to support teen centers and juvenile hall programs. Tickets are $20 and include drinks, food samples, and live music.  Action News Now

CULTURE NEWS

  • The 64th Annual Cottonwood Rodeo kicks off this Mother's Day weekend with a parade at 10 a.m. today and rodeo events at 1 p.m. today and on Sunday at Bobby Jones Arena.  Action News Now
  • Chico State theatre students are set to honor Lady Gaga in an end-of-semester showcase at Rowland-Taylor Recital Hall on campus today. The performance, which includes hits like Paparazzi and Shallow, also raises funds for the theatre program (organized by Professor Matthew Teague Miller and Music Director Olivia Gomez-Cerullo).  North State Public Radio

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Kirk Monfort (46-year career) transformed first-year programs at Chico State by introducing field trips and enhanced class experiences. On Wednesday, May 27, the ERFSA will honor eight distinguished faculty and staff during a ceremony and luncheon at the campus.  Chico State Today
  • Seven retired faculty and staff members will be inducted into the Hall of Honor during the 15th annual ceremony on Wednesday, May 27, from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the BMU Auditorium — the event honors their contributions to the university, its students, and the local community.  Chico State Today
  • High school students from six area schools competed in Durham at Cal Custom Enterprises to build Santa Maria-style grills in a six-hour welding challenge on Thursday. The event highlighted the rising need for skilled trades + provided insight into job paths for graduates.  Action News Now

  • The Chico Area Recreation and Park District paused adult outdoor summer sports leagues due to staffing shortages and technical issues. New hires will be trained before the leagues resume at the end of May.  Action News Now
