- ➤ Neighbors said that 48 year old Valerie Cadwallader was shot and killed by the Butte County Sheriff's Office on May 9 after she allegedly pointed a gun at deputies and told them to shoot her. Action News Now
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Michael Courts, a full-time Chico State anthropology student and father of six, is using his studies to protect Native cultural heritage by helping repatriate 549 ancestors and 97,089 cultural items from university collections — work grounded in the traditions he learned growing up along the Klamath River. He will graduate this May and plans to pursue a master’s degree in wildland management to combine traditional knowledge with modern GIS mapping to guard sacred sites from wildfires and looting. - ➤ Taylor Nilsson from the Butte County Fire Safe Council says homeowners should clear a five to 30 foot area of dry brush and trees, remove wood stacks and other flammable items, and replace wooden fences with chain link to cut fire spread—Chico residents on the east side are urged to take these steps before fire season begins. - ➤ Yesterday, the Butte County Public Law Library held an open house at 6 p.m. led by Congressman Doug LaMalfa and local officials to showcase free legal advice after its $80,000 annual state funding was cut.
