COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Nearly Summer Wellness Fair & Music Festival will feature local wellness businesses and music to support the Chico Housing Action Team. The National Weather Service in Sacramento has issued a Fire Weather Watch for gusty north winds and low humidity from 8 a.m. Sunday to 8 p.m. Monday — residents are advised to avoid outdoor burning.  Action News Now

CRIME NEWS

  • A Chico man under investigation for child sex crimes died by apparent suicide after investigators attempted his arrest at Chico Creek Nature Center parking lot in Lower Bidwell Park on Wednesday—he injured himself with a knife after a bean bag round was fired and collapsed before being pronounced dead at a local hospital.  KRCR

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Chico State held its 135th commencement celebration this week—over 3,000 undergraduate and nearly 350 graduate students crossed the stage during ceremonies that began on Wednesday with graduate studies and continued on Thursday with communications and education events, marking a major milestone in their academic journeys.  KRCR
  • The Chico Unified School District board chose HMC Architects to rebuild Pleasant Valley High’s Building D after last month’s fires—an emergency declaration speeds up the process—and they will order replacement teacher supplies for the upcoming fall.  Action News Now
  • Inspire School of Arts and Sciences will break ground next month on a new campus at a 7.5-acre site on Fremont Street off Notre Dame Boulevard after the Chico Unified School District board approved $34 million in funding. The project will end 14 years of sharing facilities with Chico High School and will be led by Modern Building.  Action News Now

HEALTH NEWS

  • Butte County Behavioral Health will use a $7.7M Proposition 1 grant to renovate a former Enloe Health facility into a new mental health center in Chico (serving up to 40 clients) while offering 24-hour support (to Butte and surrounding counties); construction will begin later this year and the center could open by next spring.  North State Public Radio
