  • Today, community members can join a fundraiser horseback ride at Meadowbrook Ranch in Magalia to honor Chico State’s Kristina Chesterman—who died in 2013 after a drunk driver struck her bicycle while she studied nursing—and raise funds for the Kristina Chesterman Memorial Medical Clinic.  Action News Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Chico State students earned national awards in New York when 24 delegates received a Position Paper Award and an Outstanding Delegates Award at a Model UN conference in April—while the computer science team took first place in the National Cyber League competition by outperforming teams from other colleges. Faculty achievements in music and philosophy also received recognition through competitions and published works.  Chico State Today
  • Chico State is honoring the Class of 2025 today with ceremonies where over 3,000 undergraduates and nearly 350 graduate students receive their degrees. The National Weather Service has issued a Fire Weather Watch from 8 a.m. Sunday to 8 p.m. Monday for fire zones 215-219 with north winds and low humidity that may raise fire risks.  Action News Now
  • Chico State’s Project Rebound program will honor graduates who overcame past challenges; 41-year-old Bobby Gordon earned his bachelor’s in Geography and plans to pursue a doctorate while 44-year-old Renee Richard received her master’s in Social Work and will work with the unhoused—both will be celebrated during a special commencement ceremony on May 18 at 2 p.m.  KRCR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • CAL FIRE completed two days of wildland firefighting training at Loafer Creek campground on Lake Oroville to prepare for the fire season. The agency said its Air Attack base in Chico is now staffed with firefighting aircraft and all stations, crews and heavy equipment have been fully staffed since March + German firefighters observed the drills as part of a training exchange.  Action News Now
  • The Chico ad hoc committee on homelessness held its second meeting this week and heard from service providers like Taylor Bunch of True North Housing Alliance—her presentation outlined a peer outreach program that reached over 300 unsheltered residents. The group will address topics including addiction, mental health, and city policies in upcoming meetings and plans to update city council this summer, with the next meeting scheduled for May 28.  North State Public Radio
