- ➤ A 2025 survey in Butte County conducted on January 28 counted 1,392 people without housing, including 1,065 in Chico, which marks an 8.8% rise from past counts. The report noted that fires in summer 2024 worsened housing challenges—many residents are cost-burdened with high rents relative to their incomes. Action News Now

- ➤ California's unemployment rate fell to 5% in April while the national rate dropped to 3.9%—Glenn County saw a 6.8% rate, making it the highest locally. Action News Now
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Chico State University will keep Whitney Hall closed this school year because expensive repairs that cost $40 million for earthquake safety and its HVAC system are not funded, leaving many students without housing. University staff are studying ways to add more beds+ such as building a new dorm or selling University Village to cover the nearly 800 missing first-year beds. Action News Now

- ➤ Chico City Council approved a three-year contract yesterday for a new downtown ice rink — the project will cost over $235,000 in the first year and be managed by CARD. Action News Now

- ➤ Construction on the new Enloe Health Gonzales Comprehensive Cancer Center in Meriam Park was halted on April 24 due to safety concerns after inspectors found issues and Enloe Health hired an independent inspector to plan fixes. City officials + Enloe Health are working together to correct the problems so construction can resume safely and the 107,000-square-foot center will serve as a key facility for cancer treatment.
