COMMUNITY NEWS

CRIME NEWS

  • Following a neighbor dispute that sparked a small vegetation fire on Thursday, May 22, a Concow resident reported the incident and law enforcement arrested neighbor John Sousa on a felony count of arson to wildland, and he is held on bail ($75,000) at Butte County Jail.  KRCR

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On May 23, Cal Fire Butte County completed a controlled burn in Thermalito that treated 254 acres of grassland; officials said additional burns will occur in the second week of June.  KRCR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Chico City Council approved a three-year contract with The Holidays on Ice for the downtown skating rink, with the city’s general fund covering over $253,000 for the first season, over $238,000 for the second, and more than $241,000 for the third. Councilmember Addison Winslow opposed the deal—citing concerns that rain-related closures and other challenges could lead to operating deficits.  KRCR

  • Over 500 people visited Bidwell Canyon Marina at Lake Oroville on Memorial Day weekend’s first day, and visitors are advised to reserve boats and kayaks soon—demand is high as the event continues. This busy weekend shows local interest in water recreation.  Action News Now
