  • A fast moving fire destroyed the Orland home of Phil Golia (a local football coach, active National Guard member and Purple Heart recipient who had lived there for 15 years) on May 27, and everyone escaped safely while neighbors rallied with a GoFundMe to assist the family's immediate needs.  Action News Now

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Chico Fire Department responded to a reported propane smell near West Lassen Ave. and Carlene Place on Wednesday morning—air monitors later confirmed the chemicals were from insecticide rather than propane by 12:36 p.m.  Action News Now

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A prescribed burn in Magalia along Rambling Way has been postponed due to recent rain making conditions unsuitable, CAL FIRE said. The 50 acre burn will be rescheduled when weather conditions improve.  Action News Now
  • Northstate agricultural officials found the invasive glassy-winged sharpshooter on Costco plants, warning it can spread Pierce's disease. Residents who bought grapevines or citrus plants since April 21 must cover their plants with two garbage bags+contact the agriculture department for safe removal.  KRCR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Butte County Fire Safe Council is taking over the free gravel grant program from Rebuild Paradise that helps eligible residents add gravel to the first five feet of their homes for wildfire defensible space. Approved residents will get next-step instructions by the end of June.  Action News Now
  • Chico's new Fire Chief Wes Metroka took command yesterday and will boost staffing levels to reduce overtime for 60 firefighters. The Paradise High School grad, with 28 years of firefighting experience in Paradise and Chico, aims to ease overtime burdens on his crew — an effort set to begin soon.  Action News Now
