COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Downtown Chico Business Association is reviving the free Friday Night Concert Series at the City Plaza from May 30 to August 29 to bring the community together with music and dancing—attendees are encouraged to bring takeout from local restaurants and in June can get a discounted beer by dining downtown before the show.  Action News Now
  • The Chico Animal Shelter is preparing to host California Adopt-a-Pet Day on Saturday, June 7, where fee-waived adoptions will be offered from noon to 4 p.m. at its Fair Street location + many pets will have a chance to find new homes. The event is part of a statewide effort by over 150 shelters to find homes for around 5,000 pets and is supported by the San Francisco SPCA and the ASPCA + local officials expect increased adoptions.  Action News Now

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A hiker fell 30 feet from a waterfall in the Pulga area of Butte County and was rescued by a team that used a 150-foot extended rope rescue — he was then flown to Enloe Medical Center.  Action News Now

CRIME NEWS

  • Chico Police arrested 43-year-old Jessica Lopez—accused of starting two small fires behind a business on Forest Avenue—after first responders found smoke at 8 a.m. yesterday; firefighters quickly doused the flames with no property damage reported.  Action News Now
  • The Butte County Sheriff's Office said a black Lexus belonging to missing Chico women—84-year-old Dolores Sakamoto and 64-year-old Vivian Luna, who disappeared on July 21 after leaving home—was found on March 24 near Mount Shasta Ski Park in northern Shasta County, where human remains were also discovered and local authorities continue to investigate.  KRCR

HEALTH NEWS

  • City Manager Mark Sorensen explained that a stop work order was issued on April 24 at the Enloe Health Gonzales Cancer Center due to inspector concerns and weather conditions. City officials are working with Enloe Health, the architect, the contractor, and the engineer to resolve compliance issues—construction is expected to resume in the coming weeks.  Action News Now
