ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Emergency personnel are responding to a gas leak from a ruptured line under the road at East 8th Street and Parkwood Drive—officials closed Parkwood Drive north of 8th Street and 8th Street between El Monte and Coit Tower Way—and urged nearby residents to shelter in place and turn off appliances.  KRCR

CRIME NEWS

  • Chico Police arrested 30-year-old Kevin Leeson on Wednesday morning after he stabbed a coworker at a local business—officers said the victim sustained minor injuries and Leeson surrendered after crisis negotiators arrived, resulting in charges of attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon.  Action News Now

CULTURE NEWS

  • This weekend in Chico offers a range of cultural events—Max Minardi will perform today at Winchester Goose at 7 p.m. while Listen Up! House Concerts brings Americana on Saturday at 7 p.m., and a Juneteenth celebration at DeGarmo Park drew community members on June 19.  North State Public Radio

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Chico Unified School Board is expanding transitional kindergarten classrooms across four schools to meet growing demand; three classrooms at Little Chico Creek Elementary were completed by May while Emma Wilson, Marigold, and Citrus Elementary are planning additional rooms with the Marigold project awaiting state approval. Citrus Elementary will also upgrade its campus with a new kindergarten building at a cost of $29 million—funded by Measure K.  Action News Now
  • Board member Eileen Robinson said the Chico Fire Department left Pleasant Valley High School's art building unsuppressed after a 4:20 p.m. fire on April 25 and returned at 7:45 p.m. to face a second blaze — she asked the city manager for an in-depth explanation at a November board meeting while the board approved emergency actions for art classes.  Action News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Chico Public Works announced that Brown General Engineering will begin construction on Peterson Memorial Drive in Lower Bidwell Park on Monday, June 23 to repair the road and protect historic trees by moving the pavement and adding shoulder backing — the project also includes resurfacing gravel parking lots near Sycamore Pool and near Vallombrosa Avenue — while costing about $2 million. For about six weeks, the road will be closed to both vehicles and pedestrians as crews aim to complete the work in early August.  KRCR

SPORTS NEWS

  • Tomorrow, June 21, Chico High School will host the 48th Annual Lions Club High School All-Star Football Games with the Small Schools game at 5 p.m. and the Large Schools game at 7:30 p.m., where recently graduated seniors will compete and support a charitable cause. Tickets cost $15—free for children aged 5 and under—and all proceeds will benefit Camp McCumber for children with diabetes.  KRCR
