CRIME NEWS

  • 72-year-old Mark Sanfratello of Chico was arrested on June 28 for the 1983 murder of his girlfriend Teresa Peroni in Oregon — a cold case reopened after DNA tests on a skull tied to her led to his indictment, and he remains in custody in California pending extradition.  Action News Now
  • Chico Police arrested a 32 year old man named Sergio Rivera Hernandez in June for firing two shots into the air near a child during a domestic violence incident—he is now held in Butte County Jail.  Action News Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Garden expert Jennifer Jewell enriched Gateway Science Museum’s native plant garden by leading local volunteers in creating Northern California’s first pollinator garden—she served as curator from 2011 to 2018—and will lead the Winter Wreath Workshop this winter to expand community science education.  Chico State Today
  • Simpson University expanded its nursing program by increasing each cohort from 27 to 45 students to help fill local nurse shortages—this change raised the program’s capacity from 135 to 225 students.  Action News Now
  • Chico State University opened a new farm stand at the University Farm entrance on July 2, where residents can buy fresh produce and cut flowers from 8 a.m. to noon daily except July 4, and the student-run stand offers items such as sweet corn at $0.75 per ear and flower bouquets from $5 to $20 & gives students practical work experience in agriculture.  KRCR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Chico residents are frustrated as the Warren Settlement Agreement limits local officials from permanently removing illegal encampments, allowing homeless individuals to return to public spaces—Public Works Director Erik Gustafson said the agreement, which runs until January, hampers effective enforcement.  KRCR

HEALTH NEWS

  • The City of Chico issued a swim advisory at Sycamore Pool in Bidwell Park due to elevated bacteria levels that increased the risk of illness for children, the elderly and those with compromised immune systems — officials worked with Butte County Public Health to monitor the water and improve safety.  KRCR
  • The City of Chico issued a swimming advisory at Sycamore Pool on Monday after tests found E. coli levels averaging 269 MPN per 100 ml, well above the recommended 100 MPN—daily testing continues while officials plan to revise their weekly methods with Butte County Public Health so the advisory can be lifted once levels consistently drop below the threshold.  Action News Now
