CRIME NEWS

  • In June 2017, Matthew Nisleit went missing after he slipped during a hiking trip near Feather Falls — California’s second tallest waterfall at 400 feet, according to a friend.  Action News Now
  • Chico police responded to an altercation near Humboldt Skatepark on Monday—arresting two men amid a significant officer presence as the conflict unfolded.  Action News Now
  • Chico man Gerald Michael Thompson, 51, was not charged with homicide after he shot 53-year-old Donald Laroy Stevens in self-defense at a homeless camping site on Eaton and Cohasset Roads—he now faces charges for firearm possession, giving a false name and drug possession with a court appearance set for July 17.  KRCR

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Pacific Gas and Electric Company announced a $50 million program that will match bill payments for eligible low-to-moderate-income customers to help avoid service disconnections until December 31—2025. The company said nearly 400,000 customers may benefit as funds are disbursed on a first-come, first-served basis.  Action News Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Chico State University was ranked among the best U.S. colleges on Monday morning in July when Money Magazine rated it 4.5 out of 5 stars—marking the third straight year the Wildcats earned top honors. The university also ranked 11th in top public schools in U.S. News and World Report and third in online programs in Forbes.  KRCR

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Middle Bidwell Park is hosting 200 to 500 goats from Capra Environmental Services Corp. to control invasive plants and reduce wildfire risks. The goats work in areas enclosed with electric fencing and warning signs—and a herdsman with guard dogs monitors them while visitors are asked to keep a safe distance.  KRCR
  • Between 200 and 500 goats will graze Middle Bidwell Park to reduce fire fuel loads by eating an acre of invasive plants each day. The goats, provided by Capra Environmental Services Corp, will be kept behind electric fencing & watched by a herdsman and guard dogs while some trails are temporarily closed for public safety.  Action News Now
