Good morning, Chico. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 16th of July.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Butte Humane Society will celebrate 114 years with the Gilded Garden Gala on September 13 at the Sierra Nevada Brewery's Big Room. The elegant event will feature fine dining, live entertainment and auctions to support animal care (tickets are available until September 5).  KRCR
  • Chico’s only cooling center—run by Safe Space with local church partners—has been providing meals, showers and community activities to help residents beat the extreme heat while offering a safe space for all. The center now asks for more volunteers and food donations for both people and their dogs as it rotates between locations every two weeks.  North State Public Radio

CRIME NEWS

  • On Saturday, July 12 at 3:55 a.m., a Butte County Sheriff's Office deputy in Chico stopped Grant Howard for driving without headlights and, seeing drug paraphernalia in plain view, searched the vehicle — finding methamphetamine and a glass pipe that led to his arrest on a felony drug charge under Proposition 36.  KRCR
  • Butte County District Attorney announced that Gerald (Mikey) Thompson will not face murder charges after fatally shooting neighbor Donald Stevens last week at an alternative homeless camp in Chico because he said the incident was an act of self-defense following a dog attack that led to rising tensions.  Action News Now

CULTURE NEWS

  • Chico city leaders launched the Power Up Public Art Project to transform utility boxes into canvases for local artists — two boxes have already received artistic makeovers — and artist Jesse Jentzen’s approved design will soon be displayed at the corner of 5th Street and Broadway.  KRCR

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Chico’s Middle Bidwell Park now has grazing goats eating brush and grasses to reduce fire hazards; officials say the herd deployed by Capra Environmental Services Corp. will work for three to four weeks. Some trails may close temporarily, and residents are asked not to feed or touch the goats (guard dogs and a herdsman are on duty).  KRCR
  • Hundreds of goats are grazing at Upper Bidwell Park in Chico to reduce fire risks and control invasive plants; Capra Environmental Services provided the 500 goats that a herdsman and guard dog monitor around the clock. The goats are expected to eat up to an acre of vegetation each day — a method that helps manage dry areas impacted by last year's severe wildfire.  Action News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • North Valley Fiber began a project on June 25 to install high-speed fiber for 9,039 Chico residents and businesses, with crews working on Park Vista Drive and East 8th Street. The city secured a $12,746,798 grant to fund the project — the work will boost education, health care, and local businesses and is set to finish by December 2026.  Action News Now
