- ➤ United Way of Northern California and Children First Foster Family Agency will host the first United for Children cornhole tournament on July 26 at Silver Dollar Fairgrounds in Chico — the event will raise funds for at-risk and homeless youth and support disaster relief, health, education and financial stability. Teams may join the Expert Cornhole Champions division for $70 or the Family-Friendly Cornhole Classic division for $50 with cash prizes for top finishers, and tickets are on sale now. Action News Now

- ➤ A jury on Friday convicted Timothy Weichert of first-degree murder in the killing of Daniel Niles and of the attempted murder of a woman he strangled two days later. Action News Now
- ➤ Chico police rescued a woman on Thursday around 7 a.m. after she alerted a passerby she had been taken at knifepoint and arrested (34-year-old) suspect Missael Ledezma on charges of kidnapping, false imprisonment and domestic violence. KRCR
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ A federal judge blocked the 314-acre Stonegate development in Chico after ruling that federal approval was unlawful because agencies skipped required consultations on vernal pool impacts and the threatened giant garter snake— local environmental groups and officials noted the decision came after a lawsuit challenged the approval process. The project cannot proceed until a comprehensive environmental review is completed— the ruling emphasizes the need to protect sensitive habitats. Action News Now

- ➤ Butte County Public Health expanded a no-swim advisory from Sycamore Pool to Big Chico Creek on Friday after tests confirmed E. coli O157 and several children were hospitalized.
