CRIME NEWS

  • An Oroville couple faces 39 felony counts of animal cruelty after police rescued 38 neglected dogs and a deceased puppy from their Fallbrook Avenue residence—Brandi Lee Jacobs is held on bail while authorities plan to re-arrest Jose Bartolo Martinez Jr. after a paperwork error.  KRCR
  • After last week's rescue of 38 dogs from alleged severe neglect in an Oroville home, efforts continue to nurse the abused animals back to health plus the Northwest SPCA works to manage its overcapacity while adoption fees are waived to help rehome them.  Action News Now

  • Local artists are using pizza boxes to make art for the new Pizza My Art show at Chico Art Center — the fundraiser will help support local art programs.  Action News Now

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • S&L Recycling will hold a grand opening on Friday for a new recycling center on Highway 32 where residents can earn money by trading in their cans and bottles.  Action News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Chico crews cleared 48 homeless camps Monday from three sites along the Lindo Channel, between North Cedar Street and Depot Park, and at Community Park. At the Lindo Channel site, 12 of 24 residents had been offered shelter before either refusing help or leaving for bad behavior—crews also found hazardous items such as batteries, needles and propane tanks.  Action News Now
  • Construction is progressing on the North Valley Fiber Project—an initiative to bring high-speed internet to underserved areas in Butte County, with work starting in the Chapmantown neighborhood on June 25 in Zone 1 and July 21 in Zone 6. The project will eventually serve over 9,000 addresses and first customers are expected to connect by October 1.  KRCR

  • Chico native Kurt Kitayama won his second PGA Tour event by edging Sam Stevens by one stroke at the 3M Open on July 27. He shot a final round 65 after tying the record with a 60 on Saturday—boosting his FedEx Cup standing and improving his world ranking.  KRCR
