- ➤ Habitat for Humanity of Butte County launched an initiative to support affordable housing projects in Paradise and at Rosalynn Court in Chico by partnering with Habitat International and aluminum recycler Novelis, who awarded a grant to fund construction and drive aluminum can donations at its ReStore (located on 220 Meyers Street near Boucher and Wisconsin Streets). - ➤ Animal lovers in Chico will visit Butte Humane Society's Paws in Paradise event on Thursday, August 14 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. as adoptable cats and dogs dressed in tropical attire are showcased in speed dating-style meetups—participants pay $15 per household and same-day adoptions are available. - ➤ On July 29, the Butte County Sheriff's Office arrested five men in Forest Ranch after deputies responded to gunshot reports and discovered an illegal marijuana cultivation and processing operation on a property, seizing 1,483 marijuana plants, processed marijuana and two firearms—authorities said the investigation was ongoing. - ➤ The Butte County Office of Education has cancelled layoff notices and reinstated migrant education services for multilingual and migratory students—reversing a July decision that halted the programs due to a federal funding disruption. Action News Now

- ➤ Butte County supervisors approved a temporary sediment removal plan at Five Mile Recreation Area to help Chico manage winter storms — the project will start within weeks and take less than a month, paving the way for a $4 million permanent solution in three to five years.
