CRIME NEWS

  • Chico Police detained a suspect after responding Friday at 11 a.m. to a barricade situation near West Sacramento and Nord Ave—an hour-long standoff ended with officers still present and advising the public to seek alternate routes.  Action News Now
  • Chico woman Shirelle Payne, 35, was arrested in Durham Monday for allegedly trying to break into a home and driving a stolen green Toyota Camry—authorities said she was on Post-Release Community Supervision from Sutter County and drugs plus theft evidence was found at the scene.  Action News Now
  • Gerald Thompson was sentenced to two years in prison by the Butte County District Attorney's Office for shooting Donald Stevens—who had pointed a shotgun at him and threatened him at a homeless camp in Chico yesterday.  Action News Now
  • A Chico homeless man—Timothy Wayne Wiechert—was sentenced by Butte County Superior Court to two life terms plus extra years for murdering Daniel Niles Sr and attempting to kill a homeless woman after he dumped Niles’ body at FoodMaxx in March 2023.  KRCR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A new traffic light and pedestrian crossing have been installed on the Esplanade in front of Chico High School—replacing the old crossing at W. Sacramento Avenue that had flashing amber beacons. The installation is expected to improve pedestrian safety around the school.  Action News Now
  • Chico is contesting a federal court order to change or exit the Warren Settlement that restricts enforcing anti-camping laws after a 2021 lawsuit by eight homeless individuals. City manager Mark Sorenson said the city filed a Rule 60 Motion on July 14 and will file another motion later this month—plaintiffs have rejected revised proposals that include new wildfire prevention areas.  KRCR

  • Cycleland Speedway will host the 2025 Outlaw Kart Showcase on August 18 and 19—gates open at 1 p.m. with races starting at 7 p.m.—where more than 30 drivers will compete for a $2,500 prize and NASCAR champion Kyle Larson is expected to visit.  Action News Now
