COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A new traffic signal and crosswalk were installed near a local school in Chico to improve safety for students walking — officials said the measures are expected to reduce traffic incidents.  Action News Now

CRIME NEWS

  • Chico Police Department detained a suspicious woman near Shasta Elementary School after a lockdown was lifted at around 3:30 p.m.—they did not locate a firearm and are continuing to investigate the incident.  Action News Now
  • Chico police arrested Erika Garcia, 35, at her residence for stabbing a male victim with a deadly weapon at downtown City Plaza on Aug. 16—video surveillance and witness statements led to her identification and the injured victim remains in serious but stable condition after treatment at a hospital.  KRCR
  • David Allen Petterson, 39, and Felicia Louise Whitrock-Wyatt, 37, were arraigned Tuesday at Butte County Superior Court on charges of child abuse and animal cruelty after police visited their Glacier Peak Lane home following neighbors' complaints and removed 37 animals — including malnourished cats, dogs and dead cats — while two non-verbal special-needs children aged 8 and 10 were reportedly abused.  Action News Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At Butte College's Chico Center, a groundbreaking ceremony is set for September 2 at 3 p.m.—the expansion will add an 18,100-square-foot cosmetology and barbering facility along with a 5,872-square-foot science laboratory to boost local opportunities. Construction for the cosmetology facility will start in September with classes beginning in January, while work on the science lab is set to begin next January and finish by March for fall classes.  Action News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Congressman Doug LaMalfa criticized proposed redistricting maps that may change District 1 and other areas, saying the process undermines voters’ trust in their elections. He added that the new lines could allow legislators to draw maps for their own benefit + called for an investigation.  Action News Now
  • The Chico City Council may reverse its plans to close South Park Drive in Bidwell Park, and officials will review community input before making a final decision.  Action News Now
