CRIME NEWS

  • Chico authorities arrested 44-year-old Dustin Ponte on August 23 after a traffic stop near Glenwood and Nord Avenues uncovered a loaded handgun with an extended magazine hidden in a fishing flotation device — he now faces charges for possessing an unregistered firearm, a high-capacity magazine and for violating his probation.  Action News Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Chico State public health seniors led a project last semester with Professor Stephanie Machado and partnered with the Basic Needs office to create mealkits that delivered recipes, ingredients, and cooking tools to students in need. The research measured improved food security and cooking confidence among participants—demonstrating a practical approach to campus challenges.  Chico State Today
  • Chico State was named one of the top universities for master’s degrees by Washington Monthly’s College Guide and Rankings, ranking No. 6 among 585 institutions. The university also ranked No. 27 for best colleges for tuition and tax dollars and No. 32 for best bang for the buck in the West—demonstrating its value and strong outcomes for students.  Chico State Today

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Over 6,000 customers in Butte County lost power today because of stormy weather, with the worst outages in Forest Ranch and Concow—where more than 3,700 customers were without power—and additional outages in Butte Valley and Oroville affecting over 1,000 more. PG&E reported outages beginning before 10:30 a.m. in Yankee Hill while CAL FIRE said 8,700 lightning strikes sparked vegetation fires and crews are working to restore service.  Action News Now
  • CAL FIRE Butte Unit is fighting a two-acre vegetation fire near Butte Meadows—its progress was halted—and is deploying resources to respond to lightning-caused fires near Concow and west Oroville after 8,760 strikes occurred overnight.  Action News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • With school back in session, Chico Police advise drivers to slow to 25 mph in school zones—some areas may have limits as low as 15 mph—and to watch for children crossing streets before and after school hours. Officers warn that speeding near schools can lead to penalties on driving records.  Action News Now

SPORTS NEWS

  • Chico State women's soccer head coach Kim Sutton announced on Tuesday, August 26 that she would finish her coaching career after twenty-five seasons, saying it was the right time to retire. Senior team captain Klayre Barres explained that Sutton’s personal dedication built strong team unity—evidencing her lasting impact on the program.  KRCR
