  • Chico Animal Shelter is extending its no-fee adoptions through September because a surge in animals has led to overcrowding and the program waives fees for spay/neuter surgeries, vaccinations, pet ID tags, and microchipping (services that help reunite lost pets) while visitors can adopt or foster during walk-through hours Monday–Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. at 2579 Fair St (a step aimed at easing shelter strain).  KRCR
  • Patriot Guard Riders from Northern California rode nearly 90 miles to honor fallen Navy seaman Blake Baten as they escorted him from Sacramento airport to his home in Chico—riders from Orland and Redding joined to pay respect to veterans.  Action News Now
  • AT&T and the Boys & Girls Clubs of the North Valley opened a new Connected Learning Center in Paradise that offers free digital resources—including high-speed internet, Dell computers, digital literacy courses, and a giveaway of 150 refurbished laptops—to help local families and students access essential technology. The center is part of AT&T’s California Summer of Connectivity, which aims to close the digital gap in the community.  Action News Now

  • Firefighters from CAL FIRE Butte Unit responded to three new lightning fires in Butte County — part of 13 lightning-caused fires reported since Monday as multiple thunderstorms swept across Northern California.  Action News Now

  • Chico Cat Cafe announced it will move from its Esplanade location to a new site closer to downtown — its final day at the current site is September 21st.  Action News Now
  • Ian Blessing started All The Bitter in Chico to offer nonalcoholic bitters after leaving his sommelier role at The French Laundry. Local restaurants such as The Commons—Farmers Brewing—Momona now add his zero-proof cocktails to their menus.  Chico State Today

CRIME NEWS

  • Chico Police arrested Tadashi Oto, 40, on Wednesday after he was found using narcotics on the Burnap/E. Lassen Avenue bike path—officers discovered he had an active out-of-county felony warrant and he was booked for felony probation violation, possession of unlawful paraphernalia and a controlled substance.  KRCR

  • Chico’s Legacy Stage Fringe Festival returns Labor Day weekend with over 50 performances spread across five local stages—featuring bold, unconventional art and the world premiere of the horror musical Burn Ban. The festival offers a new platform for experimental theater and diverse artistic voices.  North State Public Radio
  • Chico residents have enjoyed a busy start to an arts-filled weekend as the Fringe Festival runs from Aug 28 through Aug 31 with over 50 original performances and the Edgar Allan Poe Speakeasy offers live cocktail storytelling tonight—music fans saw Smokey The Groove on Aug 28 and can look forward to the Junk Journal Club workshop on Aug 31.  North State Public Radio
