CRIME NEWS

  • Chico Police told drivers to remove valuables from view in their vehicles to help prevent break-ins, with officer Daniel Sagastume noting that a recent law change ended the locked-door loophole & advising residents to secure items in glove compartments or center consoles.  Action News Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Chico State today launched a reorganized Office of Sustainability (renewed in Academic Affairs) led by Marie Patterson to boost green efforts on campus after a student ballot initiative. The University reallocated funding to expand the program and add a new coordinator role.  Chico State Today
  • Butte College hosted a groundbreaking ceremony on its Chico campus as it prepares to add two new buildings to expand its educational offerings. One building will house the relocated cosmetology and barbering program — featuring two cosmetology labs, an esthetician lab, and a classroom.  Action News Now

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Chico is using goats to lower fire hazards along Lindo Channel as part of the FEMA-funded Lindo Channel Defensible Space Project. The goats are grazing between Manzanita Avenue and Highway 99 with electric fences—monitored by a herdsman and guard dogs 24/7—and the project is expected to finish in two to three weeks while keeping public paths open.  Action News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Caltrans District 3 said paving on Highway 32 in Chico will resume on September 14 when crews lay the final asphalt layer overnight from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.—other work such as striping, curb, gutter, and signal improvements will continue through spring 2026 while the highway remains open.  Action News Now

HEALTH NEWS

  • A Butte County resident died from complications of West Nile Virus, with the infection confirmed on August 14. Health officials urge residents to remove standing water and use insect repellent at dawn and dusk to reduce mosquito bites.  North State Public Radio
  • Seneca Healthcare District announced that Dr. Dana Ware will retire from Lake Almanor Clinic on December 31 — after nearly 40 years of dedicated service. The clinic is recruiting a new provider and patients are encouraged to work with current staff for a smooth transition.  Action News Now
