COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Open Table Church in south Chico will host its Grand Opening Service on September 14 at Little Chico Creek Elementary starting at 8:30 a.m.+the event will feature live worship music, practical teaching and programming for children as Pastor Ed Krzyzek invites the community to explore their faith.  Action News Now
  • The Chico Area Recreation & Park District will host a free Movies in the Park event at Veterans Memorial Park on Friday night. Families will enjoy games, crafts, face painting, and a scavenger hunt at 6 p.m.—free popcorn is available before Disney Pixar’s Inside Out 2 starts around 8 p.m.  Action News Now

CRIME NEWS

  • Gridley Police Department identified Edgar Carlos Garcia, 39, a Mexican national, as the man found dead in a warehouse on Virginia Street in August and is asking the public for help with his suspicious death case while a coroner’s autopsy report is expected to take up to 90 days.  Action News Now

CULTURE NEWS

  • California State Parks unveiled a new website called Reimagine Bidwell Mansion—this site gives updates on planning and details about the historic property. Visitors can share personal memories of the mansion through the platform.  Action News Now

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices in Chico have increased to $4.47 per gallon, up by one penny from last week—statewide prices are also rising.  Action News Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • James Emery Richmond, who taught at Chico State for nearly 40 years, passed away quietly at his Lake Almanor home on August 22—he began teaching in 1969 and retired in 2008. The university flag is lowered today in his honor and a celebration of life will be held on October 5 from 3 to 5 p.m.  Chico State Today
  • Millie Kinnamont, a senior at Chico State who earned eight national debate titles, received the CSU Trustees' Award for Outstanding Achievement for speaking on social issues and helping her community. Her award will help her focus on school and get ready to study abroad in Hirakata next fall—her success shows that hard work and kindness pay off.  Chico State Today

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Crews began work to remove non-native Eucalyptus trees – known for their flammable bark and oils – from Bidwell Park on September 8. Once the trees are cleared, officials said the city will replant native trees to improve safety in the park.  Action News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Chico fire stations will hold a 9/11 remembrance ceremony on Thursday starting at 7 a.m. as on-duty firefighters gather to observe a minute of silence and ring the bell for fallen colleagues, and a main tribute will be held at Fire Station 5 (1777 Manzanita Avenue) at 10 a.m. where the public is invited to attend.  KRCR
