CULTURE NEWS

  • The 17th Annual Rock, Gem and Mineral Show will be held at the Chico Silver Dollar Fairgrounds this weekend — with Saturday events on September 20 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday events on September 21 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Action News Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Former Chico State basketball star Jalen McFerren and his wife Easton have launched the McFerren Scholarship to support Wildcat student-athletes while honoring his famous buzzer-beater known as the McFerren Miracle—this award is open to all athletes and shows their commitment to giving back to Chico State.  Chico State Today
  • Chico Unified School District now offers transitional kindergarten for all 4-year-olds statewide — 20 classes serve over 400 students while Shasta Elementary lacks space, and the district will host a TK/kindergarten faire on October 23 at McManus Elementary School from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. for parents to learn about their options.  Action News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Chico City Council and staff will review survey results from 147 residents who reported dim or missing street lighting near Chico State, schools, and older neighborhoods. They will use the findings to plan lighting upgrades and road rehabilitation projects – aiming to improve safety while addressing light pollution.  KRCR
  • Oroville Municipal Airport, Corning Municipal Airport, Benton Airpark, and Haigh Field will receive funding from the FAA's $168.85 million Airport Improvement Grant — the funds will support planned improvements to airport facilities and safety measures.  Action News Now
  • CAL FIRE Butte Battalions 1 and 8 held an OVEIS training session at the Openshaw Training Center on Sep 16 where they practiced locating potential victims in a multi-story building. Firefighters climbed ladders during the session (OVEIS stands for orient, vent, enter, isolate, and search).  Action News Now
