COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Chico celebrated the completion of a new bicycle bridge over East 20th Street—marking phase five of the Bikeway 99 Corridor that extends 7 miles along Highway 99 from Eaton Road to Skyway.  Action News Now
  • The Palo Cedro Youth Soccer Organization will hold an Oktoberfest fundraiser on October 4 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at IOOF Hall on Silverlode Lane—attendees can enjoy live music by Wilder, German-inspired food, festive costumes, and a grand raffle at 8 p.m. that offers season passes to Mt. Shasta Ski Park and a three-night KOA stay to support local youth soccer programs.  Action News Now
  • Three founders of the Chico Housing Action Team will retire next week after nearly 12 years of providing affordable housing for the homeless, having helped house around 200 people through its programs. The nonprofit aims to raise $400,000 as a farewell gift to support the Builders’ Village project—its legacy fundraiser has already raised over $200,000.  Action News Now

  • Yesterday, the Chico Marketplace held a job fair from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for businesses such as JCPenny, Auntie Anne's, and Maurice's — an event that offered local job seekers a chance to explore employment opportunities.  Action News Now

CULTURE NEWS

  • Chico artist Valerie Rose, an ASL teacher who founded Sign Club and the Sign Sign Project, gave a lecture on Sept. 24 that explained how art functions as a language for Deaf and DeafDisabled artists—her murals Bloom and Sign Language is as Necessary as it is Beautiful behind North Rim Adventure Sports and on Show Love Thrift Store underscore her mission to broaden understanding of the Deaf community. This talk aimed to move viewers away from sympathy towards learning from the artistic expressions of these creators.  North State Public Radio
  • A film titled The Lost Bus stars Matthew McConaughey as Paradise bus driver Kevin McKay—who saved 22 children during the 2018 Camp Fire—and will be shown for a limited time at The Pageant, Feather River Cinemas, and Spotlight Cinemas.  Action News Now
  • Gateway Science Museum opened Life on the Edge (a new exhibit that shows extreme environments on Earth and in space) which will run until January 3, 2026. Visitors can code a rover to explore displays that imitate NASA missions.  Chico State Today

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Jenny Scheer has been named the new general manager of the Western Canal Water District, a 41-year-old agency covering 67,000 acres, and she will begin in December. Scheer brings strong water use and farming expertise—she previously worked as an Ag Water Specialist and led the Santa Clara Farm Bureau—to replace Ted Trimble, who will retire in December while assisting with key projects.  Action News Now
  • Butte County Public Works finished the Chico Five-Mile SAFE Project, which included vegetation management, channel improvements, and levee repairs in the Five-Mile Basin to lower flood risks for Chico and nearby communities. A staff report on the work will be presented to the County Board of Supervisors soon to review project details - ensuring full permit approvals and safety compliance.  Action News Now
  • Butte County Public Works finished the Five-Mile SAFE Project on Sept 25th by removing vegetation, sediment, and repairing levees in the Five-Mile Basin ahead of the rainy season—work that increased flow capacity and protected nearby homes from flooding.  Action News Now

HEALTH NEWS

  • Glenn Medical Center will end its emergency room service on September 30th and close completely on October 21st, leaving residents with a longer drive to Chico’s Enloe Medical Center for urgent care. Willows Fire is upgrading its team from Basic Life Support to Advanced Life Support to provide critical care while waiting for an ambulance — the new service will be available by the first day of 2026.  KRCR

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Butte College Roadrunners finished their first four games with a perfect 4–0 record as they scored 86 points in the first halves and limited opponents to 30 points overall—showing a strong start to the season.  Action News Now
