ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Cal Fire changed its controlled burn plans in Butte County due to wet conditions; the burn will now focus on 50 acres of prepared piles instead of the originally planned 433 acres. The Phoenix Vegetation Management Project, started after the 2017 Ponderosa Fire, will burn heavier fuels that produce longer-lasting smoke—ensuring safe fuel reduction in damp conditions.  KRCR
  • Today, the second annual Breathe Better Butte Fair is held at Riverbend Park in Oroville to introduce two air quality programs: the Breathe Safe Butte Program provides free portable air filters for eligible low-income residents—valued at about $200 each—and the Lawn Garden Equipment Voucher Program offers vouchers for swapping gas-powered lawn tools with battery-powered alternatives. Those who cannot attend the event can apply for the voucher program starting Oct. 2 at the Butte County Air Quality Management District office in Chico.  KRCR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Chico began work on a new red-light camera system at E. 9th and Mangrove to help cut traffic violations—this project, a partnership with the Chico Police Department and Verra Mobility, is one of eight high-risk sites and will be built over several months while details emerge.  Action News Now
