CULTURE NEWS

  • The 19th Annual Wild and Scenic Film Festival will return to Paradise Performing Arts Center on Saturday, Oct. 11th after a 17-year break as it highlights fire stewardship and environmental protection. Friends of Butte Creek and the Butte County Fire Safe Council will host the event with doors opening at 1:30 p.m. and films beginning at 2:00 p.m.  KRCR
  • The City of Chico Arts Commission and the Chico Arts & Culture Foundation are hosting Fall for the Arts gala at the Chico Women’s Club on Friday, October 17; the event will feature a raffle, live T-shirt printing and the presentation of the 2025 Mayor’s Achievement in the Arts Awards while tickets cost $40.  Action News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Chico City Council is considering moving the alternative homeless site due to safety concerns from nearby residents & some locals worry the move might simply shift the challenges to another neighborhood.  Action News Now
  • Chico is installing new red-light cameras at intersections such as Esplanade and 1st Avenue, Cohasset Road and East Avenue, and Notre Dame Boulevard and Skyway, but the cameras are not active yet. After a one month grace period—during which violators receive warning letters—fines of $460 will be issued, with police stating the program is meant to promote safety.  KRCR
  • Chico officials filed a Rule 23 motion to limit the Warren v. City of Chico settlement to only the eight homeless plaintiffs, arguing that the lawsuit was not certified as a class action. City Attorney Vince Ewing — along with representatives from Public Works and the City Manager — will attend Friday’s court hearing as the city seeks to narrow the settlement’s scope, with another dispute resolution set later this month.  Action News Now
  • Vote-by-mail ballots will be sent Friday for the November 4 special election in Butte County—every active voter will receive one even if voter guides may not arrive until October 14. Ballot drop boxes are available today at nine locations in Chico and nearby areas—ballots must be postmarked by Election Day and early in-person voting will begin on October 25.  Action News Now

HEALTH NEWS

  • Since August 2024, the Butte County Sobering Center in Chico has offered safe 24-hour care for over 2,600 intoxicated people to sober up without needing the ER, jail, or rehab. Behavioral Health Director Scott Kennelly said the center connected about 626 visitors to drug and alcohol services and 400 to mental health services—he hopes to add a transportation system and secure official alternative status to serve more people.  Action News Now
  • CHICO — The former Enloe Behavioral Health building is being remodeled into a new mental health rehab center that will open soon in Butte County.  Action News Now
