COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Chico State professor Kasey DeAtley wrote Assembly Bill 411 that allowed ranchers to bury dead livestock on their own land under strict safety rules, cutting costs and reducing emissions. Chico State piano professor Natalya Shkoda performed at the state Music Teachers’ Association of California Convention while her student April Smirnoff earned State Honors and won a Gold Prize at an international competition.  Chico State Today
  • On October 16th, after finishing a client's haircut at Famous Fades, Chico barber Mickey Anderson donated two brand-new shirts and a pair of shoes to a homeless man whose worn clothes caught his attention—bystander Timothy Langhoff recorded the act and later shared the photos on Facebook, with the recipient's mother thanking them.  KRCR

CULTURE NEWS

  • Nearly a year after the Bidwell Mansion was lost to arson, the 91 year old former Chico State student Ed Schoenstein honored its memory by crafting a 13 inch tall wooden model at the Chico History Museum—he spent three months using techniques learned in industrial arts at Chico State—and visitors can view his tribute from Thursday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Action News Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Chico State computer science students led by Professor Samuel Siewert are using advanced sensors — including drones and infrasound microphones — combined with machine learning to track elephant sounds and help protect them from poachers. They have tested their methods on campus with a simulated savanna and produced conference papers that support ongoing research in wildlife monitoring.  Chico State Today
  • Chico Unified School District will host a TK and Kindergarten Fair today at McManus Elementary from 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM so parents can learn how to enroll their children in a district school.  Action News Now
  • Chico State University opened its new Jay Gilbert Farm Store and a 9,500-square-foot education center on the university farm yesterday. The store sells fruits, vegetables and dairy products made by College of Agriculture students and operates Tuesday through Thursday from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.—the $11.6 million project was funded by state allocations and a leadership gift from Jay Gilbert.  KRCR

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Cal Fire Butte crews and the Butte Fire Safe Council conducted a prescribed burn yesterday in Magalia to reduce wildfire risk by burning 100 acres near Tika Ln and Nimshew Road — the project was planned with local agencies to create a fuel break and protect nearby homes.  KRCR

  • California Senator Adam Schiff announced plans to introduce a bipartisan bill to restore the Critical Access Designation for Glenn Medical Center in Willows—he is working with Congressman Doug LaMalfa to help reopen the hospital after it lost federal funding.  Action News Now
