COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Azad’s Martial Arts Center and Bright Futures For Kids Foundation announced the return of the 34th Annual Basket Brigade, which will give Thanksgiving meal baskets with uncooked ingredients to families in need across Northern California. The event will be held on Wednesday, November 19, at 5 p.m. in Butte, Glenn and Colusa counties — baskets are distributed at locations including Azad’s Martial Arts Center in Chico.  Action News Now
  • CHICO, Calif. — The North Valley Community Foundation is offering grants from $500 to $10,000 under its Camp Fire Fund Grant Program to support nonprofit groups and government agencies in recovery efforts; applications must be submitted by December 1 with awards set to be announced mid-December.  Action News Now

CULTURE NEWS

  • Butte College will host a fall season of music and theater performances, starting with a Pop Band Show on November 6 at Black Box Theatre and Jazz Night on November 7 at Discovery Bar and Kitchen in Chico—other events include a Symphonic Band performance on November 13, a Choir and Guitar Ensemble show on November 19, an original play from December 4 to 7, and family-friendly shows on December 11 and 13. The series will offer a variety of live acts from students, faculty, and guest artists for a range of audiences.  Action News Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Chico State will host a Health Care Career Fair on Thursday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Bell Memorial Union — the event will offer rural high school students demos, mini-talks and mentoring from local health care agencies, academic programs and community groups to explore career opportunities.  KRCR

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A first major storm is moving toward Chico and will bring heavy rain and gusty winds that could topple trees, down power lines and cause outages. PG&E crews are trimming trees and the Chico Fire Department is preparing for swift water rescues — residents are urged to secure outdoor items and clear gutters.  Action News Now
  • Northstate is preparing for wet weather this week as new flood prevention renovations at Five Mile Basin on Big Chico Creek face their first test—emergency work last September increased basin capacity with sediment removal and levee repairs. Butte County Public Works Director Joshua Pack said staff will closely watch water diversion and may clear blockages if sediment buildup occurs—extra monitoring is planned for nearby risk areas.  KRCR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Butte County started a Walnut Buying Period on Saturday to reduce walnut theft + non-processing buyers must follow strict guidelines, officials said.  Action News Now
  • Caltrans is urging drivers to slow down during this wet storm as heavy rain and high winds threaten Northstate roads; officials warn that loose debris may fall on the roadway (a crash on November 4 blocked northbound lanes on I‑5 near Balls Ferry Road). They advise checking vehicle maintenance and using Caltrans Quickmap for the latest road conditions.  KRCR
  • Chico Public Works will start its annual fall leaf collection on November 10; the route will begin in the southwest—moving clockwise over six weeks until the final pickup on January 1. Residents must not leave leaves in the street after the final collection to keep the process safe.  Action News Now

  • Vitalant is holding blood drives in November to help meet the critical need for blood donations during the holiday season—local events include one at Grace Community Church in Chico on November 9 and another at Enloe Medical Center in Chico on November 13. Donors have a chance to win one of two $10,000 gift cards and earn a $20 gift card bonus if they donate between November 24 and 30.  Action News Now
