COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Community Action Agency of Butte County North State Food Bank will distribute free basic foods on Saturday at the Silver Dollar Fairgrounds from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m.—or until supplies run out—in response to SNAP benefit delays.  KRCR
  • The Thanksgiving Basket Brigade celebrated its 34th anniversary at Azad’s Martial Arts Center, providing Thanksgiving meals for families in need and having served over 88,000 people over the years. Grandmaster Farshad Azad said volunteers delivered baskets to five cities across three counties—Chico, Paradise, Thermalito, Williams, and Willows.  Action News Now
  • The new First 5 Family Center opened at Esplanade House yesterday to help homeless families with parenting classes, educational programs, and social activities. Local organizations and grants supported the opening—ensuring services for about 50 families in transitional housing.  KRCR

CULTURE NEWS

  • Shasta Historical Society in Chico is set to reopen soon after nearly two years of renovations. The building needed new electrical wiring, an HVAC system replacement, and a brand new water heater after a January 2024 flood—repairs that have ensured its safety for future public use.  Action News Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The new science building at Butte College opened for classes this semester to improve the learning experience for students. More than 2,500 students have used the $73M facility that features 21 labs, two classrooms, and a cadaver room—funded by Measure J and set to host community events in its planetarium next year.  Action News Now
  • Chico State’s Gateway Science Museum and Ahart Herbarium are set to host the Wonderful Winter Wreathing Weekend with a party on December 6 from 5 to 8 p.m. at 625 Esplanade and a workshop on December 7 from 1 to 4 p.m. at Holt Hall—both events featuring wreath-making led by Jennifer Jewell and Dr. Adrienne Edwards, with ticket prices ranging from $70 to $120 and all proceeds supporting science education and local exhibits.  Action News Now
  • Chico Creek Nature Center invites children ages 5 and under to join free nature classes called "Nature A-B-C's"—where they can meet animals, enjoy story time, sing, make crafts, and take a short walk through Bidwell Park.  Action News Now

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Firefighters burned piles on 60 acres in the Feather River Ranger District on Wednesday at five spots (La Porte Road, Little Grass Valley Reservoir Recreation Area, American House, and Wyandotte Campground) to reduce fire fuel while a storm helped disperse the smoke. Short-term smoke may reduce road visibility in low areas, and firefighters will keep patrolling the sites with no further ignitions planned.  Action News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Chico city council announced a holiday season expansion of its free parking program so free parking will be available every Friday starting Friday, Nov. 21 to help downtown retailers attract more customers. Parking revenue has dropped 12 percent and foot traffic has fallen since switching from meters to kiosks (according to the city).  Action News Now

  • Chico manicurist Bruce Tran said pedicures help boost circulation and relieve stress (a hidden benefit highlighted on Wellness Wednesday) and the report showed that salon visits can protect foot health.  Action News Now
