COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Dec 1, Mooretown Rancheria and Feather Falls Casino—working together—donated 200 turkeys to local nonprofits, including the Oroville Rescue Mission, the Salvation Army in Yuba City, and Azad's Martial Arts Thanksgiving Basket Brigade in Chico.  Action News Now
  • Downtown Chico parking kiosks have been upgraded to simplify paying for parking as holiday shopping season begins, and Action News Now reporter Bella Barbosa confirmed the improvements are in place to help shoppers navigate the busy area. The streamlined system is expected to ease access for local visitors during the peak holiday season.  Action News Now
  • California Park Post Acute in Chico is asking the community to join its Santa for Seniors initiative to bring holiday cheer to 53 long-term residents this Christmas. Donations such as new blankets, diabetic socks, or puzzle books can be dropped off at the facility on Sierra Sunrise Terrace before Dec. 12.  Action News Now
  • Families in Chico can drop off letters to Santa at a mailbox near West Sixth and Arcadian Avenues at Enloe Health Park this holiday season—there will also be a tree lighting event at the park.  Action News Now

CULTURE NEWS

  • Local pastor Andrew Burchett's new musical 'O Favored One' will debut in Chico this week and retell the Nativity story with more than 30 original songs while focusing on Joseph's journey. The show runs December 4th to 7th and December 11th to 14th with evening performances at 7 p.m. and Sunday matinées at 2 p.m. (Tickets cost $20 to $30) (Closed captioning is available on December 7th at 2 p.m.)  Action News Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Chico State’s Health Administration team took first place and won $750 in the California Association of Healthcare Leaders competition by creating a solution for UC Davis Children’s Hospital after changes to H.R. 1. The university also earned top marks in online healthcare administration and study abroad program rankings—reflecting its strong academic profile.  Chico State Today

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Northern California's wet season started strong and the Department of Water Resources announced an initial 10% allocation for the State Water Project for the upcoming water year (a boost for water supplies).  Action News Now
  • A Butte County fourth grader, Judd Hallen, won the 'I Voted' sticker contest after receiving the highest public vote, announced by County Clerk and Registrar of Voters Keaton Denlay on December 1 — his design will be used for the 2026/2027 election cycle.  KRCR
  • FEMA unveiled preliminary flood maps for Butte County and Chico that show revised flood hazards — the new maps change risk zones in north Chico including areas around Rock Creek, Kiefer Slough and Nord. A 90-day appeal period runs from Dec. 3 to Mar. 3 for residents and businesses to submit technical data before the updated maps take effect.  KRCR
  • Cal Fire Butte County lifted the residential burn permit requirement in unincorporated areas as of November 7 and reminded residents to follow safety guidelines – keeping a 10-foot zone free of flammable materials and having an adult, water, and a shovel available during burns. Cities may have their own rules, so residents should check local regulations and call the Air Quality Management District on burn days.  KRCR

  • The Chico Panthers football team were crowned Division 2 Section Champions after beating the Foothill Cougars 28—20 on Dec 1; their win secured the title after a hard-fought game.  Action News Now
  • Eric Coleman completed his first year as executive director of Chico State Athletics by launching traditions like the Wildcat Tailgate and Night of Champions while recording record athletic and academic successes. He will continue to support sports programs with plans for a centralized Athletic Performance Unit—integrating training, nutrition and sports medicine—and a Wildcat Club to boost donor engagement.  Chico State Today
