COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Enloe Health hosted its annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony in Chico on Tuesday, December 2—children from the Children's Choir sang and Santa arrived by ambulance using Dr. Newton Enloe’s original horse-drawn buggy while the event honored past caregivers and community members, including the Gonzales couple who donated land for a new cancer center. A mailbox for kids will remain available throughout the holiday season.  KRCR
  • Anderson Ice Rink will open Friday with a festive night for all ages featuring ice skating, outdoor fire pits — and a Christmas movie screening as announced by the city. The event will add a fun start to winter activities in Chico.  Action News Now
  • True North Housing Alliance launched its 4th Annual Home Again campaign in Chico to help seniors and people with disabilities facing homelessness. The campaign runs until December 31 and every donation will be matched by a $50K donation from Chuck Patterson Toyota and the Emil and Leonora Stiefvater Senior Endowment, said Executive Director Taylor Bunch.  Action News Now
  • On December 2, the North Valley Community Foundation raised $100,000 to support food pantries and disaster relief while highlighting the importance of generosity on Giving Tuesday—its CEO encouraged neighbors to donate through multiple funds to help those in need. The foundation continues to serve local communities by partnering with others to address urgent issues.  KRCR
  • NSPR transitioned back to Chico State after ending its agreement with CapRadio; recurring donations automatically stopped on November 30 and listeners must now set up new sustaining gifts online—programming remains unchanged as the station increases community control. Local donors and listeners are encouraged to contact NSPR for any questions about the new process.  North State Public Radio

CULTURE NEWS

  • Chico State College of Humanities and Fine Arts is hosting its first-ever Winter Bazaar on Thursday in its arts building courtyard with over 30 vendors selling handmade art like fiber, glass, ceramics and jewelry. The event runs from 4 to 7 p.m.—attendees can also enjoy hot drinks, cookies and live music.  Action News Now

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Crews in Plumas National Forest began prescribed burns to reduce wildfire risk—burning 197 acres near Magalia and Paradise Lake and 200 acres near Challenge—with work scheduled to continue through Thursday.  Action News Now
  • The Center for Biological Diversity will sue the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service because it did not create a national plan to help gray wolves recover under the Endangered Species Act — the suit challenges the agency's approach to protecting endangered species.  Action News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Chico has started a multi-day cleanup at its alternative homeless campsite at Cohasset and Eaton Roads as directed by the city council, with the Jesus Center increasing staff presence—clearance will make room for relocations. Four residents will soon move to the Genesis shelter while eight remain at the site.  Action News Now
